About Youth Without Shelter – Working To End Homelessness
More than thirty years ago, the founders of Youth Without Shelter (YWS) saw a very concerning need that was going unmet.
“In 1986 a group of teachers and guidance counsellors created Youth without Shelter as they were frustrated with the lack of safe, emergency housing and support programs for their students. Since that time YWS has helped more than 15,000 homeless youth to build their confidence and life-skills and to find long-term stable housing and jobs. Open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, we are dedicated to providing shelter and support programs in a safe environment, with the goal of getting youth off the streets permanently.”1
Youth Without Shelter – How They Help
Based in Etobicoke, Ontario, the Youth Without Shelter team is focused on ending homelessness and one of the most important ways they support youth with their emergency residential program.
The program, “offers emergency accommodation for up to 33 youth each night. The program meets the immediate needs of the youth by providing them with crisis counselling, safe shelter, nutritious food, new clothing, and hygiene products.
While staying at YWS, youth agree to abide by YWS policies, rules of conduct and house duties. Equally important, during their stay residents must set goals and actively follow a plan to achieve these goals. Each youth works with a case manager to make sure they are taking the daily steps (such as job interviews, housing searches etc.) to meet their goals.”2
