The Ottawa Human Society provides the following details about the history of their organization. “In January 1888, a small group of ladies formed the Women’s Humane Society of Ottawa. This organization enforced the new animal protection laws and focused on bettering the lives of neglected children by lobbying for legislation to provide for foster homes.
Today, the Ottawa Humane Society’s mandate covers a broad spectrum of animal welfare concerns. The organization’s priorities include public education and pet population control, through which we seek to reduce the number of stray animals whose final solution is often destruction. The OHS provides a wealth of animal care information to the public through humane education visits, public information awareness booths, participation in various volunteer programs and the multitude of services offered to the community.”1
Ottawa Humane Society – How they help others
As a non-profit, community-based organization and registered charity, Ottawa Humane Society works to fulfill their mission “to lead Ottawa in building a humane and compassionate community for all animals.”2 The organization engages volunteers, raises funds and facilitates pet adoptions through local pet stores and a cats for seniors program.
“Since 1994, the OHS has been partnering with pet stores in our community to help more cats and small animals find forever homes. The Pet Adoption Location (PAL) Program is convenient in both location and longer opening hours for people adopting OHS animals. In working together we create more visibility for the animals in need, as well as greater public awareness of responsible pet ownership. Today, there are more than 25 pet store and veterinary clinic locations active in the program. In the past 10 years more than 16,000 animals have been adopted through PAL partners.”3
“The Cats for Seniors program is an innovative matching program that will help interested adopters find the perfect feline companions to match their home and lifestyle. Not only will the cat find a loving home, but the new owner will reap all of the emotional, physical and psychological benefits pet ownership provides. By matching potential adopters to feline companions, we are providing both the animals and adopters the chance to create a lifelong bond.”4
